Mark Jarman

Senior Remote Sensing & GIS Consultant

mark_uavMark joined Environment Systems in 2009 following the completion of an MSc in GIS and Remote Sensing at Aberystwyth University. He has since progressed to Senior Consultant and Project Manager of Project URSULA (UAS Remote Sensing for Use in Land Applications). Project URSULA is a 2 year research and development programme which will explore the potential for advanced remote sensing, using small unmanned aircraft, for use in land applications, primarily high input arable farming.

Whilst working for Environment Systems, Mark has become an accomplished user of many remote sensing and GIS software platforms. The use of these platforms has enabled Mark to substantially develop his skills in the processing of various satellite, airborne and UAS derived Earth Observation (EO) datasets. Through the combination of these software packages and EO images, Mark is able to undertake detailed analyses’ within the various GIS and statistical systems.

Through having such a diverse skill base, Mark can undertake a wide variety of projects which have included:

  • An assessment of the condition of rangelands within Southern Georgia using Earth Observation data and remote sensing techniques (Mercy Corps).
  • Landcover mapping of Permanent Features from Earth Observation Imagery (The Agriculture and Rural Payment Delivery Division (ARPDD) of the Scottish Government).
  • An assessment of the extent and severity of erosion on the upland organic soils of Scotland using Earth Observation (Scottish Government).
  • The suitability and application of object-orientated classification for habitat mapping in Ireland (Environmental Protection Agency).
  • The identification of invasive species such as Japanese Knotweed using LiDAR and colour-infrared aerial photography for the South Wales Valleys Consortium (Caerphilly County Borough Council).
  • Mapping agricultural land use using historical satellite imagery combined with agricultural subsidy records (FERA).
  • The quantification of areas of vegetated and bare peat on blanket bog habitats in the Monadhliath SAC (Deer Commission of Scotland).
  • An inventory of freshwater and terrestrial BAP priority and Annex 1 Habitats (Scottish Natural Heritage).

Mark is a current council member of the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society (RSPSoc) having been electing in September 2011. He both attends and presents at conferences held by the society and recently presented the work undertaken for the EPA at the annual conference held in Bournemouth 2011.

Mark is also a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

The final report for the work undertaken for the Scottish Government can be found here.

A summary article of the findings were also published in the EOMag which can be found here.
