mark_large_topMark joined Environment Systems as a Remote Sensing and GIS Consultant in January 2009 following the completion of an MSc in GIS and Remote Sensing (with distinction) at Aberystwyth University.

Whilst working for Environment Systems, Mark has become an accomplished user of many remote sensing and GIS software platforms including ENVI, Erdas Imagine, ER-Mapper, Socet-set, eCognition, ArcGIS and gvSIG. The use of these platforms has enabled Mark to substantially develop his skills in the processing of various satellite and airborne derived Earth Observation (EO) datasets.  This has included SPOT, ASTER, IRS, Quickbird, Landsat, MODIS and both current and historical vertical and stereo aerial photography. Through the combination of these software packages and EO images, Mark is able to undertake detailed analyses’ within the various GIS and statistical systems.

Through having such a diverse skill base, Mark can undertake a wide variety of projects which have included:

  • An assessment of the extent and severity of erosion on the upland organic soils of Scotland using Earth Observation (Scottish Government)
  • The suitability and application of object-orientated classification for habitat mapping in Ireland (Environmental Protection Agency).
  • The identification of invasive species such as Japanese Knotweed using LiDAR and colour-infrared aerial photography for the South Wales Valleys Consortium (Caerphilly County Borough Council).
  • The quantification of areas of vegetated and bare peat on blanket bog habitats in the Monadhliath SAC (Deer Commission of Scotland).
  • An inventory of freshwater and terrestrial BAP priority and Annex 1 Habitats (Scottish Natural Heritage).

Mark is an active member of the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society (RSPSoc) and both attends and presents at conferences held by the society. He recently presented the work undertaken for the Scottish Government at a conference held in London on the subject of the Carbon Cycle. This work was later presented at an international conference on object-based image classification held in Ghent, Belgium.

Mark is also a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and will start the process of becoming a Chartered Geographer within the next year. Alongside obtaining this qualification, Mark also plans to become PRINCE2 qualified.

The final report for the work undertaken for the Scottish Government can be found here.

A summary article of the findings were also published in the EOMag which can be found here.
